We can use the energies and elements of the seasons for guidance to harness our health and maintain optimal sleep through the seasonal changes and beyond.

In my upcoming Sleep Deep: Ayurveda, Yoga & Bedtime Rituals That Work 4-week series you will learn the root causes of common sleep challenges and the foods, remedies and rituals to find balance. 

In addition to a workshop with practical ways to improve your sleep, the series includes yoga practices, breath work, and guided relaxation. You will discover how to disconnect your mind from the day, calm your nervous system, and align with circadian rhythms.

At the end of summer the heat of the season has accumulated. For some people this may show up as feeling overheated, experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, skin issues, rashes, acid reflux, or loose stools. It can be helpful to clear internal heat with foods that are cooling in nature like coconut.

As the seasonal wheel turns, we are moving into the Vata season. The autumn season brings mobile, cool, and dry qualities. For some people this may show up as feeling cold, an increase in anxiety, dry skin, sleep disturbance, or insomnia. It can be helpful to support warmth and grounding. In this warm sleep milk almonds, dates, and ghee offer grounding. Nutmeg and saffron have a long history as sleep remedies.

Do you have a hard time falling asleep or toss and Do you have a hard time falling asleep or toss and turn when you finally make it to bed?

Do you wake up between 2am and 5am wishing you could sleep straight through the night?

Do hot flashes wake you up mid-sleep? Or does your mind spin and spin making it hard to rest?

These are common sleep challenges I hear about and there are practices and remedies that can help.

Have you tried different sleep remedies and they just don’t work for you? This may because not all remedies work for everyone especially when they are not specific to the individual or one’s unique constitution. 

In Ayurveda, we address the root cause and the individual, rather than a one size fits all approach. 

If you have a hard time falling asleep this may point to an excess of the Pitta dosha. Whereas if you have a hard time staying asleep this may be indicative of excess Vata dosha.

There are specific rituals and remedies that will be supportive though it is most helpful if we tailor the measures for both the challenge at hand, the root cause, and the individual constitution or imbalance.

If you are experiencing sleep challenges now, there is hope that a good night's rest is available to you.

Deficiency can cause lethargy, fatigue, depletion, cold hands and feet, heart palpitations, dizziness, and headaches. 

Blood building foods can be supportive to incorporate into your daily nutrition. 

Favorite iron rich and blood building foods in addition to red meat are cherries, pomegranate, beets, raisons, dates, figs, apricots, and spinach.

If you are restless through the night, if waking up early feels impossible, if you feel fatigued as you move through your days, or if you carry excess weight, it is time to reset your internal clock. 

Chronobiology is a newer area of study regarding one’s circadian rhythms or our relationship to night and day cycles. The body has a 24-hour cycle that is matched or mirrored to the light and dark cycles of a day. Although circadian rhythms were defined in the west by a scientist in 1954, this is wisdom known within Ayurveda for centuries. 

The light/dark or circadian rhythm directs the body on when it should digest food, how to prepare for sleep, and how to regulate every function in your body including blood pressure, metabolism, hormone production, body temperature, and cellular repair. Every one of these functions have a predictable pattern which is dependent on the light/dark circadian cycle. 

The light and dark cycles of day and night are a compass for your body and its systems. Your daily schedule or what you do and when you do it, predicts your sleep, weight, stamina, mood, and quality of health.

When you eat is as important as what you eat. 
When you sleep is as important as how much sleep you get. 
When you exercise is as important as how much you exercise.

Timing is everything when it comes to restful sleep, good digestion, and optimal health.
