As adults, we often have to learn to hear the clarity of its call. That is wintering. It is the active acceptance of sadness. It is the practice of allowing ourselves to feel it as a need. It is the courage to stare down the worst parts of our experience and to commit to healing them the best we can. Wintering is a moment of intuition, our true needs felt keenly as a knife.”

In my efforts to embrace winter and the changes it brings, I am reading the lovely book Wintering by Katherine May.

Did you know that your daily schedule or what you Did you know that your daily schedule or what you do and when you do it predicts your weight, stamina, mood, sleep, and quality of health?

A hundred years ago and beyond, people lived in harmony with their environment. Waking and sleeping were based on the rising and setting of the sun. What one ate was based on what was available in the current season.

Of course there are great advancements and conveniences that have come with modern living yet we are now more separated from nature, often ignoring the very cycles our bodies are inherently connected to. When we live out of sync with circadian rhythms it can create imbalances such as anxiety, depression, weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, and much more.

Are you feeling wired and tired? This past week ( Are you feeling wired and tired?

This past week (year) and been beyond difficult to digest. If you are noticing old ways of numbing out surface, constantly checking the news, or feeling unable to settle you are not alone. 

When one has been rattled and shook sitting still and feeling breathing may be unbearable or unattainable. Movement can be an ally at this time. 

A walk in nature, a yoga practice, lifting weights, getting on the rowing machine, or a cycle on the bike may be great ways to move energy and ground you back in body. 

You may discover that after moving it will be easier to sit still, rest, and relax. Then meditation, legs up the wall, or a warm bath may be a lovely way to soothe your nerves. 

Thinking of you all as we discover ways to support our wired and tired nerves.

In the northern hemisphere we are in the heart of winter. The earth under a blanket of snow fosters a deep stillness and quietude. Yet in our modern culture we are often encouraged to push forward with aims of productivity and endless to-do lists. This is the season for slowing down, nourishing the body, and fortifying one’s energy. 

Embrace the slower pace by walking slow, talking slow, and eating slow. Nourish your body with warming broths and slow cooked stews. Fortify your energy with meditation and pranayama.

Saturday’s are for spaciousness. Invite the mind Saturday’s are for spaciousness. Invite the mind to move inward toward quiet. Allow the heart to widen its reach of care to include you. Draw the senses away from the stimulus of the external world. 

Even if just for a moment. Rituals help one take pause. Dropping into the vast stillness beneath the clench of conflict where everything is in balance. 

A moment sitting in your favorite chair. 
Choosing to simply sip tea with nothing else. 
Listening to a favorite song on the turntable. 
A walk in winter’s wonderland. 
Lighting a candle to steady the flame of the mind. 
A few minutes of sitting meditation. 
A warm bath to wash away worries. 
Lighting a bundle of sage or Palo Santo to allow the aroma to ground and stabilize the energy body.
