Being born and raised in the dairy state, having grown up drinking milk, it can be hard at times to be dairy-free.   Sure, I love the taste of milk, but my sinuses become instantly congested, so rarely is it worth it.  I used to be able to get by drinking store bought nut milk until […]

One of the most wonderful things about having my private practice within an Ayurvedic wellness center is that I have the opportunity learn about a variety of herbs, spices, oils and foods that are beneficial for each season. Autumn brings with her the wind element or vata dosha.  Excess wind can scatter thoughts, creating stress […]

Autumn is the return of warming, oil rich foods to nourish during the season which is known for its cooling and drying qualities.   This oatmeal is filled with fall apples, dried fruits, and pecans with rich ghee and coconut.  You could swap out the quick oats for steel cut oats or rolled oats, just be […]

This past weekend was spent in the driftless area along the Mississippi River, taking in the bounty of autumn colors and visiting family.  My parents have two large  granny smith apple trees which even after hours of picking you’d never know an apple left the tree.  With the arrival of the darker days, I crave […]

Growing up I spent a great deal of time with my maternal grandparents.  They ran the Geiger House bed & breakfast, an 1850’s historic home, just blocks from the Mississippi River in southwestern Wisconsin.   It’s here that I developed a deep appreciation for perfectly folded bed sheet corners, sun made ice tea and home […]

A vibrant variety of cauliflower with fractal like spiral patterns and a bright green color, romanesco stands with a beauty all of its own.  I eagerly await the arrival of romanesco at the farmer’s market and coop as it is so striking and one of my favorite vegetables.  This week I bought three heads as […]

We have entered March, coming closer to Spring, yet it certainly feels as if we are still in the heart of winter.  Eating in tune with the seasons, in the colder months I crave warming foods like this nourishing breakfast porridge inspired by Nourished Kitchen.  For years I couldn’t eat grains such as rice, or […]

This is a very simple, flavorful and fairly quick homemade chicken soup.   It is nourishing and the perfect cure for fending off winter colds. 2 quart water 2 chicken breast or thighs, bone in + skin on 1 small onion, chopped 3 carrots, chopped + divided 3 celery stalks, chopped + divided 2 cloves […]
