Taking care of our feet is essential for our overall health. Neglecting your feet can lead to discomfort and pain elsewhere in the body as dysfunction in your feet can transmit strain or imbalance to the knees, hips, pelvic floor, low back and neck. 

Your feet need to be sturdy enough to bear your weight and flexible enough to adapt to uneven surfaces. In addition to walking, running, and squatting, your feet help you maintain balance and absorb shock if you jump or trip. 

You may have been told that you have flat feet, high arches, a neuroma, bunions, osteoarthritis, plantar fasciitis, hammer toes, or loss of fat pads. Any of these can lead to pain in the feet. From years of wearing shoes and sitting in chairs, some feet simply do not work optimally. No matter the diagnosis or concern, the root of many foot challenges are weak and stiff feet along with imbalances in the hips. 

The good news is that foot pain doesn’t need to be permanent. It can take time to see progress though it is possible to improve or resolve foot pain over time with consistent care. 

In this five week series you will: 
+ Strengthen and mobilize your feet and ankles
+ Strengthen and mobilize your hips
+ Improve your balance and walking gait pattern

How's your balance? Can you stand on each foot for How's your balance? Can you stand on each foot for 10 seconds or one minute? While our vision and vestibular system each play a vital role in our ability to balance, so do our feet! 

There are over 200,000 nerve endings in your feet that receive feedback with each step you take. These receptors send messages to your brain which then signals your muscles to make adjustments to help you move with ease, skill, and stability. 
 
Healthy feet can more readily sense the surface beneath you, strengthening the foot-brain connection. This allows you to navigate varying surfaces with more ease keeping your body upright on uneven surfaces, preventing rolled ankles or falls.

What to do when you are overwhelmed or life feels What to do when you are overwhelmed or life feels chaotic?

Ayurveda tells us that when life (or our health or imbalance) is complex, the remedy is to simplify. 

Embrace the law of subtraction rather than addition. 

One could simplify the diet. Shifting to easier to digest foods such as soups, kitchari, or bone broth. 

Simplify the schedule by doing the bare minimum or removing what you can from your plate. 

Saying no where and when you can. 

Go to bed earlier. 

Reduce the amount of media you take in - news, social media, and device time. 

Talk less, listen more. 

I have found both personally and in my private practice working with others, that even a few days of simplify and subtraction can make an enormous impact.

Chances are you remember that classic childhood so Chances are you remember that classic childhood song about bones. You know the one-the shin bone's connected to the knee bone, the knee bone's connected to the thigh bone. And on and on it goes. 

While this song is simple it is also insightful and a reminder that everything in our structural body is connected. Reminding ourselves of this can be the key to understanding and eliminating discomfort. Sometimes the discomfort we feel is merely a symptom of a problem rooted elsewhere and in a place we may not be considering-our feet. 

Well known biomechanist Katy Bowman has mentioned in her numerous books and interviews that when a person complains of pain in the body, she almost always starts with the feet.

The health of our feet directly affect the health of our ankles, knees, hips, and spine.  The foot bone's connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone's connected to the knee bone, and so on.  The feet are the number one link in the chain. So let's start with your feet!

It's truly a masterpiece of engineering. Many of the world's most magnificent architectural forms are based on the structural alignment found in our bodies. All of these structures that still stand today, have a very important characteristic in common: a strong foundation.

Our bodies too have a solid foundation for us to stand on - our own two feet.

While the foundations of these ancient buildings are still mostly intact, over the years they have needed some care and restoration. This work is done with great care, attention to detail, and a gentle hand in order to preserve beauty and integrity.
