I woke up with fear cycling through my nervous sys I woke up with fear cycling through my nervous system, residue from a dream. 

I sit down on my cushion, set the timer, the bell rings. 

The ocean of my heart and mind feel turbulent. 
I ground myself, try to relax, and give my attention to the feeling of breathing.

In time, there's a settling. I connect to a place within that's deeper and calmer than the waves. A place of stability. A stream I can trust.

Fear and clinging loosen their grip. 
Not knowing takes on a new comfort. 
I can hear the rain, my heart softens. 
My breath feels smooth and quiet.  My mind still. Time goes by. Stillness. 

The bell rings. I bow. 
My faith restored, more peaceful, more calm.

I chant. I think of the Supreme Reality. I pray. I bow. 
I roll out my mat, breathe, move, stretch, rest. 

This is why I practice.

Happy Ganesha Chaturthi, the day we celebrate the Happy Ganesha Chaturthi, the day we celebrate the elephant headed deity. Ganesha is the embodiment of wisdom and is considered the "Vighna Vinashak," which means the remover of obstacles.

To honor Ganesha you can offer him sweets, incense, red flowers, and love. It is customary to call on Ganesha to remove obstacles and bestow wisdom when embarking on something new or what is ahead.

May Ganesha bless us all with wisdom and the strength to overcome any challenges that come our way.

So many people I work with skip breakfast. Skipping breakfast can increase anxiety and weight gain. Breakfast is essential to ground after a night of fasting. It also will get your metabolism activated to be ready to digest the rest of the day.⠀

Do you want more steady, sustainable energy throughout the day? Eat breakfast, seriously. It is good for your mind and body.⠀⠀

OAT PORRIDGE⠀⠀
1 tsp ghee⠀⠀
2 green cardamom pods⠀⠀
1” cinnamon stick⠀⠀
A few saffron threads⠀⠀
1/2 cup whole oats ⠀⠀
1/2 cup whole or plant milk⠀⠀
3/4 cup water⠀⠀
⠀⠀
In a small pot on medium low heat, add ghee and spices. Once aromatic, add the oats and toast until slightly browned. Add the water then the milk, bring to a boil, then turn down to median low heat. Cook until the oats are soft, about ten minutes. ⠀

Warm milk is an age old remedy to promote sleep. Warm milk is an age old remedy to promote sleep. 

A common question is - do you have to use dairy milk or can one substitute with plant milk?

Dairy milk is unctuous and heavy making it ideal to promote sleep, relaxation, and deeper nourishment. Because of these qualities it pacifies both Pitta and Vata dosha which are common culprits of sleep challenges. 

Organic whole milk is the very best choice. Though how milk is prepared can make a big difference in whether one can digest it. 

Some individuals with dairy sensitivity discover that when milk is combined with water, boiled, and spiced it’s easier to digest and doesn’t cause issue. 

A2 milk, sheep milk, and goat milk are easier to digest than A1 milk (the most common milk Americans drink and have access to). I highly recommend trying half full fat A2 milk and half water. Bring it up to a boil turn it down and do that three times then add your spices.

If one still cannot digest dairy with these measures, then yes, plant milk can be a substitute. Though there is not a plant milk that is going to have the same qualities and impact on nourishing the deeper tissues. 

Cashew milk and coconut milk are going to be the heaviest milks (that is a good thing when it comes to sleep). Coconut is heavy though it is cooling in nature so heating is important here to add the warmth. If dairy is not possible, Pittas may appreciate coconut milk and Vatas may benefit more from cashew milk. Also, to make plant milk slightly more unctuous you could add a quarter teaspoon of ghee.

Also, A2 milk is easier to digest.

SPICED MILK

1 cup of whole or plant milk
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
1/4 tsp ground ginger or 1/2 tsp fresh grated 
A pinch of saffron threads 
A pinch of grated nutmeg 
A small pinch of black pepper 
1-2 cardamom pods, crushed
1 tsp jaggery if sweet is needed

Combine, bring to a boil & simmer, strain, and sip.
